i'm reading the book howl's moving caste was based on. it's good, but it makes me quite sad, since i prefer the book quite a bit to the film adaptation. i kinda feel like i'm wronging miyazaki by doing that, it's not a good feeling

i'm reading the book howl's moving caste was based on. it's good, but it makes me quite sad, since i prefer the book quite a bit to the film adaptation. i kinda feel like i'm wronging miyazaki by doing that, it's not a good feeling They both present their art to make us laugh and smile, so it's kind of wronging both of them to feel bad about your own opinion, yes? I finally got around to reading Extras by Scott Westerfield. The whole series is done a lot better than the premise makes it sound, if you can ignore the 28th-century valleygirl speak and the general undercurrent of disdain for the West coast stereotypes, but I like this fourth book in the trilogy. Shifting the big social concern to hierarchy/fame just makes it seem a little deeper and more relatable than the previous books' concerns with beauty and hedonism. Even though I thought the central concern was always about being accepted, standing up for what you know is right, and how difficult it is to get both... a class struggle is way more interesting than some camping trip or party. Government conspiracy notwithstanding. I also like that Extras changed the setting to East/Southeast Asia. Yeah, I can hear the cries of "cultural appropriation!" and maybe it shows: Westerfeld still seems to be working on a truth-binary paradigm, some cultural references seem more like careful name-drops than anything that's just a part of the characters' lives, and Aya gives her older brother just a little too much sass for my comfort. I wonder how the characters manage getting to Singapore from Japan so fast, and the themes as well as the time it's set in should mean the story could really have taken place anywhere. But, I just can't imagine a more perfect stage for a technological Renaissance, an explosion of such colorful subcultures, and the ironic trappings of free information.

L - read that book and loved it! It actually got me into the Sherlock Holmes series...
Melissa - I saw the Emma anime - I loved that one too - didn't remember that it was a manga. Very cool!

I should pop in here more often to update what I'm reading! Currently, I'm reading Devil May Cry 2, which is one of the two DMC light novel adaptations of the great video game series. I totally had to JUMP on this once I realized I was NEVER going to get anymore of MY Dante, the original and only-one-that-counts Dante. And, since I hadn't read it yet, I knew I had to! It has Original Dante in it, since the author went to Dante's creator, Hideki Kamiya (from teh old skool) to get an idea of how to write him and other important story elements. He did this for the first novel, as well, and at least in these stories, you know you're getting "canon Dante," just like from game #1. Even canon Vergil, and those who created DMC 3 used both these books to properly characterize Dante and Vergil. And, they seemed to steal from Beryl to create Lady's personality. They even got Cerberus' design, the 3-headed hell hound, from this book I'm reading! Now, hoping TokyoPop publishes the DMC 4 novels some day....

I'm reading a book called Alice I Have Been. It's a book about the real Alice Liddel. The one that inspired "Lewis Carrol" to write Alice's Adventures In Wonderland and Through The Looking Glass. It's a really good book so far.

I'm currently reading Trinity Blood: Rage Against the Moons, Vol. 4, Judgment Day. It's a story not in the anime, so it's an interesting read, so far. I've barely started it.
I hope to be getting to Switched by Amanda Hocking right afterward. It's an indie-published novel and is only $.99 over at Amazon Kindle. I'll have to review it a bit once I've read it. Hocking is getting pretty popular these days...
