Neil Gaiman. He's written everything from comic books (well, graphic novels, but in his words "They were comic books when I started, dammit.") to children's books to full-length novels to movie scripts. But, I think he really shines in his short stories. Mindblowing concepts, some twist in the execution... he doesn't pretend to have any answers, he just tells a story.

My favorite authors always end up being the classics: Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, Henry Fielding...
I studied and majored in English back in college, and favored the British authors the most, so I just always feel like no one can compare to these dead authors. I don't feel anyone alive today can, anyway. There are plenty of awesome ones alive today, but none so great as these...
I also love Sunao Yoshida-sensei! And, Sai Yukino-sensei! She is amazing as well, but her books aren't even published in English...
