Ah... I just finished reading this really short manga (8 chapters total) called "Watashi-tachi no Shiawase na Jikan," but it was VERY powerful, moving, emotionally gripping... Wow.... Anyway, you can read about it here: myanimelist.net/manga/11734/Watashitachi_no_Shiawase_na_Jikan, and I found it to read online through a google search. This is pretty new, so it's not published in English just yet. Here's a synopsis from MAL: A pianist who attempted suicide 3 times, Juri, is taken to help her aunt at a prison where murderers who killed indiscriminately are sentenced to death. There, she meets a man named Yuu who took the lives of 3 people. A mother's antagonism--a brother's death... Together they embrace the violent rebellion in their hearts caused by the large, deep scars they carry. However, before long, they both embrace an earnest hope in their hearts. "I want to live"...
An adaptation of novel by South Korea's most popular female novelist, Gong Ji-Young.

It's just SO awesome. Leaves you with that punch-to-the-gut feeling at the end... It should become an anime! @unger: You'll love this story. Find some time. Reading it only takes about as long as it takes to watch a movie....

I agree that someone should pick it up as an anime. I've seen meaningless stuff be animated, and this type of thing is definitely worth animating... Making people think FTW...
Throughout the whole thing I knew what was going to happen, but no matter how much I knew it, I wasn't prepared for it. I guess that's how life is in general.
I was even bawling when I was telling my husband about it. lol I'm such a sap. XD

It seems so realistic, doesn't it? Like, this story could have really happened to real people somewhere in the world.
I like that it doesn't end in a sappy, happily-ever-after way. It's realistic. It's hard. It's a lot like how life is. And, you can see that the characters can make something positive out of something sad and tragic. As in real life, you make lemonade when given lemons...
It's no wonder it's rated the 3rd top manga at MAL. It's not popular, but that doesn't equal quality...

I don't wanna spoil anything so... stop reading - there be spoilers ahead! It seems so realistic, doesn't it? Like, this story could have really happened to real people somewhere in the world. I didn't know anything about capital punishment, but apparently it's pretty common practice in some places for prisoners to not actually know a date when they'll be put to death. That being said, I'm sure you're right and this story has happened to someone somewhere before. So much in this manga just wrenches my poor little heart. Sure Yuu did wrong, but it's so awful that his life lead him where it did. He wasn't a bad person and deserved more than to just rot, waiting to die. That is probably also more common than we know... and it's far too easy to be apathetic and unattached from this type of thing. Outta sight, outta mind. What a brilliant story. I may have to look up more from this mangaka and or the original novelist.

Thar be SPOILERS aheed....!
< < < <
@avyquinn: Yeah, wasn't that really sad? Yuu didn't know on any given day when he'd be getting the axe. So, suddenly getting called to the gallows was a surprise for him, actually, even though he'd been wanting to die until he met Juri.
Love stories like this are so rare. They barely ever got to even touch each other. They knew it couldn't last, but they just liked talking to each other, and they bettered each other for it. The characters grow in the story, even though it's so short. They go from being selfish to overcoming it, instead of the other way around. And, they don't get "rewarded" for becoming less selfish. That's not really how it works in real life, anyway.
And, Yuu may have only meant to kill the evil man who employed him, but he accidently killed a woman and her baby, also. It's sad, but not so much knowing that he got a chance to change his heart before he died. I think that's why it's a bittersweet story...
