We all know what it's doing to our world. It's taking anime down, piece by piece. And the sad part is, some people don't want to do anything about it. I've been studying bootlegging & how to spot it and take down, and I looked at some one's question about how they should go about turning a bootlegger in. 90% of the comments were along the lines of "Stay out of it. Don't get involved." What is wrong with them. We need to fight & we need to take them down. I don't claim to be perfect; I've watched a few shows on Youtube.com that are illegal but I'm trying to stop and I want to help the industries that make these incredible things for fans like us. Let's fight! Let's take down those bootleggers and fansubbers!

I'm guilty as charged. Although I don't actually download it, I have boughten (is that spelt right?) bootlegged items. Which I didn't know at the time, but after watching a panel about bootleging and illegal downloading, I really wished I didn't buy it.
I've been an addict of onemanga for a while and even though I still buy the manga's after I've read them. It's not the same. I'm changing my ways.
This business won't last long if things stay this way. It needs to be brought into the light. It has to stop. We must fight!

*sighs*
This is one of the subjects I hate because it is true, a lot of people don't want to change their minds about it. I mean, that is there will to do what they want, but that means that the voice actors have a more difficult time with their jobs.
I for one, either watch it with my friend (who buys EVERYTHING from their appropriate companies) or I buy it from the company myself.
The only reason I will watch something online, is if it's in Japanese with English subtitles, but most of the time, I will re-watch it in english and get it anyway.
I feel like this is such a stupid reason for voice actors to have to deal with so much, but it's really taking over.
I am against it. Honestly, if you love the show so much, buy it to support the actors and the companies!
But again, that is my opinion, I don't mean anyone to take offence to that.... =]

For me, it's a morality issue. It's like stealing, so I won't do it. I've never been able to understand how people can do stuff like that without caring about what it does to others.
Some time ago, I bought some video game soundtracks that turned out to be bootlegs. I felt so bad about it that I went and bought real ones and got rid of the fakes.
I won't even use cracked software copies. What makes me so special that I should be able to get around buying a licensed copy of something? For that reason, I don't have Photoshop (and I wonder where people get the money to buy it, or do they just use cracked copies). I've heard it said that "software companies make loads of money and don't need mine", but that is no excuse for piracy in my opinion.
Now with anime, I rent it from Netflix, or watch it on Hulu/Funimation or whatever. So I don't buy a lot of anime anymore - I only get ones that I REALLY like, and that's usually after I already rented them. I've had several sets that I've sold that I never even watched once I bought them, so I'm careful now what I actually buy. But I do try to watch them legally online, unless it's something I'm curious about that hasn't been licensed here and is unknown if it will be. But even then, I just watch them, not download or anything.

I have vowed that if I find anime I like, I buy it, even if it takes a long time for me to get the money. And I'm learning about how to spot bootlegged stuff and how to turn the bootlegger in. There are a lot of reliable websites that can tell you what to look for: Here are a few indicators of bootleg. 1. Too good to be true price (Example: The entire FMA series goes for about 100 bucks. If some one claims they are selling all 52 episodes for half of that, BEWARE) 2. Bar code (Sometimes, with stupid bootleggers, there won't be any bar code or the bar code will be there but there won't be any numbers. Then there are the smart one who place pictures of bar codes on the package. That can make things trickier to see but, for all you Iphone(I think) users, there's a new application where you can type in the bar code number to see if the bar code is real or fake.) 3. Logos (If there are no company logos (FUNimation, aniplex, GONZO, etc.) on the package: WARNING.) 4. Art work. (Example. On my package of the first 25 episodes of FMA, there's a pic of Ed ripping of his cloak and showing of the automail. Here's what it looks like: But if the art work on it were, per say this: Then somethings not right. 5. Where are they selling it (Now we usually don't have to worry about Bootlegged stuff in lagit stores (Best Buy, Barnes and Nobel, Borders, etc.) but if the anime is being sold in an independent keosk in a strip mall. LITTLE RED LIGHT SHOULD GO OFF. That's all I really know about determining a bootleg. If you want to learn more, just google it; there are many websites that are lagit about this stuff.

I know Greg Ayres has had bootleg panels and talks about how to spot bootlegs and illegal merchandise. There was a website he mentioned once but I can't think of it to save me. Eh. I'll just add it later if I remember.
I know plushies are pretty easy to spot, bootleg wise. Always check the tags for logos. For example, if you find a Kingdom Hearts plushie if it was legit, it would have Disney and Square Enix all over it.
Believe it or not, cosplay costumes are also subject to bootlegs. However, the only way I know that you can tell if it's bootlegged is how durable it is. If it falls apart after one use, then a good chance it's bootlegged.
Another way to test if a DVD is bootlegged is to go to Amazon and type in the barcode. It should come up if you type in the correct barcod. Or check if the DVD even has a barcode number. Sometimes there are no numbers on it.

I can't stand bootlegging and I don't understand people who think there is absolutely nothing wrong with it. I'll admit that about 5 years ago I bought a bootlegged DVD of Prince of Tennis, but I had no idea it wasn't official. When I received it in the mail is when I actually found out it wasn't right.
I'm a firm believer in buying my anime and manga. I'll watch/read online before something gets licensed, but as soon as it gets licensed and released I snatch it up right away. I have close to 1000 manga volumes and say somewhere in-between 200-300 DVD's. I've had good friends of mine ask to copy my DVD's and I told them outright no. I payed for this and I am not going to let them mooch off it. They can borrow it, but they aren't going to get a free copy (though after asking me to copy it can't say I trust them to take it home and not do it >.o). No way no how! I'm trying to get the people I know to understand the importance of supporting the industry and if people keep continuing the act of piracy then the situation will only get worse.
I will never stop trying to support the anime industry!

Well I bought a DVD series a while ago now, and it was just in Japanese. The name? Kuroshitsuji. Well a few days after it got shipped, Funi announced they got it and were going to dub it. I felt like crap. So I was going to return it but the people I bought it from where all "we speak no english" which was false, cause I had sent them e-mails about it and they responded back. But in the end, I'm still going to buy it when it's released. If anything I might just buy two. But I just felt so cruddy after I payed for it. I knew it was bad but the thought of it never coming here drove me to buy it. Kinda got slapped in the face with that one. I had gotten a few plushies at my first few cons. All were bootlegged but two. Sadly I bought like 5. But I learned from my mistakes and now that even when things seem like it won't come across, you never know. It could, and has happened. I never download things. I just don't like the thought of downloading. Even if it's legally. I fear I could get a virus and have everything just go crashing down. I would probably cry for a day. I have so much stuff on here that I need. I don't know how many of you know, but a few sites that have manga for reading (*cough cough* onemanga *cough cough*) have been shut down. They are really starting to crack down on it and it makes me happy. Now I can be like normal people and just wait for my mangas to come to the stores. I really wish I had posted something about this after Anime Iowa. Greg had a panel about the state of the industry and bootlegs and such. It was really good and informative. Now if only I could remember half the stuff he said that hasn't been mentioned... Oh! For plushies, check to see where the tag is located. For example... The tag on this plushie is put right through the ear. Not really a smart place for a tag when you think about it. Which translates to Bootleg. If it's through any part of the body, it's a good sign it's not legal. A legal one would be attached to a white tag thing. Does that make sense?
